Internship Program

Academic experience is insufficient for students to make a successful transition into the theatre profession. That's why since 1946 the Playhouse has provided professional training through an aggressive, hands-on internship program. Interns are not only immersed in their chosen field, they are given the tools they'll need to become future leaders in the industry. Your work with a community of dedicated theatre professionals will be rewarded with superior resume experience, professional connections and college credit.

Academic Year Internships
For the serious minded, independent and highly-motivated college student, with a valid driver's license and own transportation, Intern positions for the academic year include Administration, Development/ Fundraising, Education, Company Management, Marketing and Production positions. Recruiting occurs year-round.

Production
Production internships focus primarily on the building, managing, and execution of the 2008 productions at Westport Country Playhouse.

Stage Management
Assist the Stage Manager in all aspects of their work including attendance at production meetings, rehearsal and technical rehearsals. Rehearsals may be held in both New York City and Westport. Run crew responsibility expected.

Scenic Construction
Carpentry, strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently are essential. Work with wood, metal, and plastics in the construction of actual scenic elements.

Scenic Painting
Prior experience/background in art required as well as the ability to draw and control paint as you bring scenic elements to life with texture, shade, and tone.

Properties
Find, build and modify practical elements on stage with work in carpentry, sculpting, metalwork, sewing, and upholstery. Run Crew responsibility expected.

Wardrobe
Assist with shopping for shows, costume maintenance and alterations. Run Crew responsibility expected.

Electrics
Assist the Master Electrician with hang, focus and instrument maintenance. Both sound and light run crew responsibility expected.

Production Management
Assist the Production Manager in all aspects of production. Strong interest in managing technical theatre and good work ethic required.

Administration
Productions are only half of what it takes to run a nationally renowned professional theatre. Learn how the other half lives. Applicants should be well-versed in Microsoft computer systems including Windows and Excel, be well organized, and possess strong written and verbal communication skills.

Education
These positions report to the Director of Education and assist the Education Associate with the planning and implementation of all educational programming including but not limited to the Apprentice Program, symposiums, special events, outreach, Insiders Insight and the day-to-day administrative tasks. Also will be co-teaching apprentice workshops. Flexibility, the ability to multi-task and a good sense of humor key. Front of House crew responsibilities expected.

Arts Management
These positions report to the Managing Director or the Director of Finance and will assist with all aspects of theatrical business management including budgets, contracts and fiscal reporting. A strong interest in theatrical management is required. Front of House crew responsibility expected.

Marketing
These positions report to the Director of Marketing and will assist with the planning and implementation of seasonal marketing materials, press releases, opening night events, audience cultivation events, focus groups, mailings, box office operations, and market research. Front of House crew responsibility expected.

Development
These positions report to the Development department and will participate in all activities related to budgeting, strategic planning, fundraising, sponsorships, donor cultivation, grant writing, special event planning and fund research. Front of House crew responsibility expected.

Company Management
These positions report to the Company Manager and will assist with actor, director and other artist contracts and travel arrangements. Strong problem-solving and communication skills, along with a good sense of humor and warm personality are crucial to attend the need and requirements of our artists. Front of House crew responsibility expected.

Artistic/Literary
These positions report to the Artistic department and to the assigned production directors. They will assist with all aspects of the literary and artistic components of production. Specific responsibilities will be developed based on the nature of the individual show. Run crew responsibilities expected.

Westport Country Playhouse provides:

Off-site housing (own transportation required to and from Playhouse)

$100 weekly stipend ($150 for returning interns)

College credit and EMC candidate points

Written evaluations by department head and Director of Education at conclusion of internship.
