The Program
The Woodward Apprentice Program is designed to provide high school students with extensive exposure to theatre through classes, workshops, and practical work with professional actors, designers and technicians.

The Place
A renowned professional theatre for over 75 years, Westport Country Playhouse draws a remarkable compliment of actors, designers, directors and playwrights with extensive theatre, film and television credits.

The Summer
  • Daily Classes (scene study, script analysis, monologues, playwriting)
  • Workshops with working professionals (designers, actors, production artists) that include Shakespeare, Acting for the Camera, etc.
  • Artist Hours in conversation with theatre professionals working on the current season and other industry guests that have included Christopher Plummer, Donald Eastman, Charles Grodin, Anne Keefe, Paul Newman, Gene Wilder, David Wiltse and Joanne Woodward.
  • Apprentice Showcase where you will write, perform or work back stage to produce an original production on the Playhouse stage.
  • Work with professional artists on mainstage productions in the Westport Country Playhouse season in a rotation that includes prop construction, scenic painting, light focus, run crew, ushering, concessions, parking, administration and more.
The Program
The program runs from June 24, 2008 to August 23, 2008. Applicants must make the full 9-week commitment. Because the apprentices work on professional shows, there is no room for time-off or vacations during their apprenticeship.

The Daily Schedule
Apprentices should expect to be onsite from noon to 11:30pm Tuesday through Sunday. Days and hours vary depending on specific crew assignments.

The Supervision
Apprentices are under the direct supervision of Westport Country Playhouse's professional staff at all times. In addition to their immediate supervisors, a member of the Playhouse education staff is always onsite whenever apprentices are on our campus.

The Application
The application process begins at www.westportplayhouse.org. In addition to the completed application, applicants must include two (2) letters of recommendation.
